Blue13 Dance Company is a contemporary Indian dance theatre ensemble based in Los Angeles, with a mission to connect diverse audiences through the power of live, aesthetically and culturally daring dance.  Since 1999, Blue13 has performed in the U.S. and abroad in it’s highly energetic and theatrical modern dance style that is inspired by the classical and cultural art forms of the Indian subcontinent.  A first-generation South Asian American, Blue13’s Artistic director, Achinta S. McDaniel pulls precision, humor, and deep emotion from her ensemble to create work as rebellious and unconventional as its architect.  Storytelling through dance is central to the company, as is a continual exploration of technique with its very diverse cast of dancers, and collaboration with international composers and artists. The work is moody and charged, and may range in one piece from a joyous, quintessentially “Bollywood” high to a dark and brooding low- a group of 10 satirizing Indian cinema, to a rhythmic footwork assault performed by 2 dancers with bell-clad ankles.   Blue13 presents the audience with an intelligent experience of performance that turns the cultural stereotype of Indian dance on its head.

The ensemble has toured internationally, including 2008’s “Fez-Queen of Cities,” with engagements at Royce Hall Los Angeles, Symphony Space New York, in Rabat, Morocco’s Mohammed V Theatre, and at UNESCO in Paris. Blue13 has been presented by University of North Carolina Wilmington, by the Tahoe Arts Project by Cal Poly Arts San Luis Obispo, and in residency at Arts For Schools in Nevada and California.  Blue13 has performed at Taal Festival in Cleveland, Ohio and the Northern Alberta Children’s Festival in Canada. Blue13 was also commissioned in 2014, with support from the Doris Duke Foundation, to create a site-specific piece at Grand Park Los Angeles, creating a weeklong interactive residency that culminated in a pubic performance of a new work exploring the cross-generational effects of the India-Pakistan partition.  Most recently, Blue13 performed in a two-month residency at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

Director McDaniel and the ensemble have worked with renowned artists and celebrities including Zooey Deschanel, Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Timbaland, Anupam Kher, Sunny Leone, Lauren Gottlieb, with director, Todd Haynes, and with legendary songstress, Kavita Krishnamurthy.  Blue13 has also worked on international feature films and commercials, and on programs and specials on FOX, MTV, CBS, NBC, Buzzfeed, WE, Sony TV, Reuters, Associated Press, and on PBS.

Outreach and education are woven deeply into the company’s mission.  McDaniel is on the faculty at USC’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance.  Blue13 offers direct participation in the creative expression of dance through “flash mobs,” public interactive dance events, residencies, classes and workshops internationally. To translate dance into lasting societal contributions is in Blue13’s very DNA, as is the desire to empower and unite people, and to spread joy and understanding through its work.

The company has performed in Paris, Morocco, New York, Lake Tahoe, San Luis Obispo, Alberta- Canada,  Cleveland, Las Vegas, North Carolina, Phoenix

Invertigo Dance Theatre creates connections and community through dance theatre programming that is compelling, fun, thought-provoking and accessible.  Invertigo was founded in 2007 by Artistic Director, Laura Karlin.  Invertigo blends dance, theatre and original music to tell stories from different perspectives, and to promote artistic and physical empowerment.  Invertigo has performed original evening-length and shorter works across Los Angeles, including the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ford Amphitheatre, Los Angeles Theatre Center, Grand Park, the Alex Theatre and the Broad Stage.  The company's work is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the California Arts Council, LA County Arts Commission and the Annerberg Alchemy Leadership Program.

In addition to Invertigo’s performances, our Dancing Through Parkinson’s program provides donation-based classes to people living with degenerative conditions in 7 locations across LA county, and our Invert/ED education program emphasizes empowerment through the creative process for students who might not otherwise have access to dance.
